HELP US PROTECT JACKASS RIDGE

A popular trail crosses onto the Jackass property.

The Land Trust’s Jackass Ridge Acquisition Campaign offers a unique opportunity to permanently protect beloved open space important to conservation, viewshed, and recreation in the Truckee Donner Region. The property is roughly 110 acres on Jackass Ridge, located above Highway 89 just south of Truckee.

Key Benefits

Conservation: Mixed conifer forests and small seasonal streams with riparian habitat dominate the Jackass Ridge property – with connectivity for wildlife all the way up to the Sierra Crest above, Coldstream Canyon to the west, and the Truckee River Watershed below. Without permanent protection, development of this land could disrupt habitat and impact runoff into the Truckee River. The property is an important part of the viewshed of both the Highway 89/Truckee River Corridor, as well as from parts of the Town of Truckee.

Protecting the view is important to the scenic gateway to Lake Tahoe, and the community’s outdoor character. Currently the US Forest Service is undertaking extensive forest health work on neighboring acreage. The preservation of the Jackass Ridge property would open up the opportunity for complimentary forestry projects that would further enhance landscape-scale forest health and wildfire resiliency on Truckee’s doorstep.

Recreation: Local trail nonprofits support the Land Trust’s acquisition, both for the immense popularity of existing trails in the area, and for plans to expand that trail network in the future. The Truckee Dirt Union’s vision describes “a network of world-class community town laps within Donkey Town that seek to gather the mountain biking user groups proactively, into an area of the forest that is accessible from doorsteps and workplaces …” The Tahoe National Forest plans for a trail expansion connecting south all the way to the Tahoe Basin, known as the Five Creeks Trail. The location of the Jackass Ridge parcel opens up further opportunities to link to Coldstream Canyon trails to the west. Lastly, the area is popular with cross country skiers and snowshoers in the winter.
