Diverse Ways to Support the Conservation of Cherished Landscapes
At the Truckee Donner Land Trust, our ongoing mission to Protect & Enjoy the precious landscapes of the Sierra is a testament to the power of collective action and the generosity of supporters like you.
The Land Trust understands that philanthropic giving is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor. To this end, we are excited to share some alternative giving strategies that not only benefit our mission but could also enhance your financial planning.
We encourage you to retain this article as a future reference to guide your giving strategy.
Giving Stocks or Appreciated Assets
Transferring stocks or appreciated assets (such as real estate or securities) is a savvy way to contribute to the Truckee Donner Land Trust. When you donate these types of assets directly to TDLT, you can potentially avoid paying capital gains tax on the increased value. Additionally, you may be eligible for a tax deduction based on the full market value at the time of the gift. This method allows you to leverage a larger donation than if you were to sell the assets and donate the after-tax proceeds, providing more support for land conservation.
Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs)
If you are 70½ years old or older, you can take advantage of Qualified Charitable Distributions. In 2024, QCDs allow you to donate or “rollover” up to $105,000 directly from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to a qualified charity like the Land Trust, each year, without having to count the distribution as taxable income. This can be particularly advantageous if you are subject to Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) and wish to reduce your taxable income.
Grants from Donor Advised Funds (DAFs)
Donor Advised Funds are an increasingly popular charitable giving vehicle. They act like a personal fund dedicated to your philanthropic goals. You can contribute cash, securities, or other assets to a DAF and receive an immediate tax deduction. Then, at any time, you can recommend grants from your DAF to support the work of the Truckee Donner Land Trust. It's a convenient and tax-efficient way to manage your charitable giving.
Why Consider Giving These “Non-Cash Assets” Over Cash Donations?
While cash donations are always appreciated, these alternative giving strategies may provide you with significant tax benefits, while simultaneously allowing you to make a more substantial impact on the Land Trust’s conservation efforts. They are powerful tools in strategic philanthropy – enabling you to support the causes you care about in a way that is mindful of your financial planning and tax considerations.
