Join these Long-Time Supporters in Saving Open Space Today
For a land trust, success is often measured in acres protected, but that metric misses the real might behind our organization’s accomplishments – you. While I enjoy writing to you about the importance of conserving iconic properties like Lower Carpenter Valley, as well as opening new opportunities for you to enjoy the land, like the Donner Lake Rim Trail, some of our long-time supporters say it best.
Following are a few of our most loyal donors offering great insights into why they got involved – and have stayed involved – with the Land Trust for years, decades, and from the very beginning in 1990.
“We are very appreciative of the Land Trust being able to set aside land for generations and generations,” said Ken and Lynn Hall, who have been supporters for 30 years. “Not many organizations we know of are able to impact the world not just today, but 1,000 years from now. And that impact on tomorrow is, I think, a cornerstone of the Land Trust not matched by others.”
It's that impact that has brought the Hall’s back as supporters year after year. “It’s one thing we can do for our grandchildren and great grandchildren,” they said.
Please make a gift today to join Ken and Lynn as they help the Truckee Donner Land Trust protect the next 10,000 acres, and care for their forests, meadows, and streams for the next 30 years, the next generation – and beyond.
Tom Burns and his late wife Louise became involved in the early days of the Land Trust. For Tom, supporting conservation is a logical nexus between his environmental background
(he attended the first Kyoto Protocol meeting on climate change in 1997) and his love of the northern Sierra.
“The Land Trust is very effective in doing what they do. They do a good job of negotiating with property owners and convincing people that conservation is a good way to care for the Sierra. They have very low overhead, and money donated to the Land Trust goes to supporting the mission,” Burns said. “The Land Trust has such dedication to preserving the environment in one of the most important areas in the world.”
Please join Tom in making a gift that will help carry the Land Trust’s work into the future. Your support helps us negotiate the next land conservation deal and ensures the natural resources of the northern Sierra that our region relies on are preserved for generations to come.
Bill and Christney McGlashan were a part of the Land Trust from the beginning. Bill served as one of the first board members when the organization was formed to protect a portion of Coldstream Canyon. And they both worked as volunteers on the Donner Lake Rim Trail.
“Dan Wendin lit a fire under a bunch of us to think about a land trust,” Bill said, whose family has been a part of Truckee since the 1800s.
“I was really impressed with Dan’s leadership in getting Coldstream.”
Looking to the future, Bill and Christney feel the mission of the Land Trust is more important now than ever before.
“Heaven knows humans are affecting the earth, our home, where nature breathes, where other species survive,” Bill said. “Unbridled support for the Land Trust’s mission is needed. I would say the Land Trust has to be at the top of anybody’s list, both in terms of accomplishments and need for continued support.”
Please help continue the work that the McGlashans and many others started more than 30 years ago with a gift today. Together, we can continue to expand and maintain the Donner Lake Rim Trail and create more outdoor access for you, your friends, and your family to enjoy.
Whether you’ve been a long-time supporter like the Halls, Burns, or McGlashans, or only recently heard of the Truckee Donner Land Trust, I want to thank you on behalf of the Board and Staff.
I hope you are proud of what we’ve accomplished together so far. And I hope you’re equally excited for what we can achieve in the future. You and I have so much more open space still to protect, forest health projects to take on, and trails to build. Thank you for your support.
Wishing you a beautiful spring season,
John Svahn, Executive Director
P.S. Your gift today will help continue the Truckee Donner Land Trust’s work on open space conservation and recreation – alongside a community of loyal supporters – well into the future. Thank you for supporting conservation in a place we all love.
