The People of the Land Trust: Winston Crawford

Winston Crawford became a supporter of the Truckee Donner Land Trust by way of big mountain adventures – exploring the backcountry and visiting huts in other parts of the world.

“When I heard we were going to get new huts, I was instantly interested, and I started researching about the Frog Lake Project, and I got incredibly excited,” Crawford said. “As I learned about the Land Trust, I also became interested in Truckee Springs.”

Crawford and his family enjoy exploring Land Trust lands, including a four-night stay at the Frog Lake Backcountry Huts.

“We just had a wonderful four days, exploring all the different aspects of that terrain,” he said. “It is really a special place.”

Crawford said he appreciates the Land Trust’s mission to not only protect open space in the area, but also open them for responsible recreation for the public to enjoy.

“If you protect a beautiful place and put it in a glass cage, it’s really hard to create inspiration,” he said. “But if you can say, ‘let me help you experience this land,’ that can invoke inspiration.”

“What the Land Trust is really offering is a way to expand and heighten that experience, that appreciation of the outdoors, and doing it with the goal of preservation,” Crawford continued. “The Land Trust has a level of interactivity with supporters, and a commitment to working with people like me that shows you’re really trying to move the needle.”
