The Access Fund, a national climbing advocacy group, honored the Land Trust this year with their Sharp End Award as Conservator of the Year (the sharp end is the lead end of the rope, and the leader risking potentially large and scary falls) for its “Save Donner Summit Climbing Campaign”.

Local climber, Gary Allen, who made the first ascent of many of Donner Summit’s classic routes, received the award on behalf of the Land Trust. Gary galvanized climbers (and retired climbers) nationwide to rally to the cause.

“Donner Summit is world class destination. It’s gratifying to know it will be available for future generations. It’s been an honor to work with the Land Trust to bring conservation and the climbing communities together,” Allan said.

On a side note, the Land Trust received one donation from a bride-to-be with a note simply reading, “My fiancé wanted to buy me a big rock.”
