While we’ve been enjoying the snow this winter – cross country skiing in Lower Carpenter Valley, snowshoeing in Donner Summit Canyon and scouting backcountry ski routes to Frog Lake – we also enjoy heading down the hill to get a taste of spring in the lower elevations. This month, we’re enjoying Canyon View Preserve near Auburn, brought to you by our colleagues at the Placer Land Trust.

An easy walk at about 1.5 miles, the Canyon View Trail is a loop that features beautiful views from the rim of the American River Canyon. Bring a lunch and take your time as their are benches and picnic tables along the way to stop and take it all in. Interpretive signs highlight features along the way.

Right now the hills are turning green, wild almond trees are just starting to bloom, and the buckeye are likely not far behind. The oak hasn’t started to leaf out yet, but blue oak, black oak and interior live oak are all on the property, as well as grey pine, which we don’t see in the Truckee region.

The trail is off Interstate 80 using the Bowman exit. Click here for more information, plant identification guides and directions to the trail.
