HIKE OF THE MONTH: TAHOE PYRAMID BIKEWAY FROM FLEISH DAM NORTH

Many of us get views of this hike as we zip back and forth on I-80 from Truckee to Reno.  But this route, located on the opposite side of the Truckee River from the Interstate, reveals quite a different (and walk or bike paced) view of the beautiful Truckee Canyon.

Highlights include a fun walk over the Fleish suspension bridge, which sways and bounces as you travel across it (Stewardship Director John Svahn's dog gets gripped on this bridge and has to be carried across). Next, the hike passes an interesting water diversion before climbing to River Rock, a popular climbing spot for Reno and Truckee's climbing communities.  From River Rock the route climbs steeply before leveling off in a fragrant pine forest.  Fall color can be spectacular on this route and views of the River abound. The hike is an out-and-back so go as far as you like and retrace your steps. The total distance to Verdi is 3.5+ miles, one way.

For more information please visit our partner the Tahoe Pyramid Bikeway's web page.  As mentioned on the Tahoe Pyramid Bikeway page, the hike travels a route infrequently used by vehicles from the Truckee Meadows Water Authority.
